Community Arts Stabilization Trust (CAST) launched Dreaming Spaces, in 2020, to bring together artists and designers of spaces and communities to envision what can be done presently to create and share art in safe environments, free from disease, discrimination, and violence. CAST places artists, cultural workers, and creatives at the center of the “dreaming” process to design cultural spaces by, for, and with them. CAST engages designers of various trades and expertise–including architects, engineers, city planners, and public health experts–to support and advance the artist “dreaming” process.
I participated as a mentor at the second Dreaming Spaces community design charrette, which took place, virtually, from 10 am to 4:30 pm on Saturday, November 14 in partnership with two arts venues: Betti Ono Gallery, located at 1427 Broadway, and Piano Fight Oakland, located at 1540 Broadway. Betti Ono Gallery is an experimentally minded space for art, culture and community with a slant towards experimentation and independent thinking. Piano Fight Oakland is a community-driven indy arts venue that takes pride in partnering with local artists to make, support and sustain great art. Within 1 block of one another, these two community spaces are prominently positioned in Downtown Oakland alongside the city’s vibrant Uptown Arts & Entertainment District.
